AMIGOS Gap Program

Stephen C. McEvoy of Belmont, Massachusetts, serves as the vice president and director of business development for Abiomed, a leading provider of medical devices for circulatory support. Beyond his professional responsibilities, Stephen C. McEvoy has supported various nonprofit organizations, such as Amigos de las Americas (AMIGOS). The organization manages programs for high school and college students, and offers the AMIGOS Gap Program for students in between schooling.

An immersive volunteer internship, the AMIGOS Gap Program enables participants to become facilitators for social change in communities across the globe. Those selected become full-time volunteers and live with a host family throughout the duration of their internship, during which time they work with a local community development organization. The experience provides participants with the opportunity to acquire firsthand experience with foreign agencies, develop leadership skills, and engage in monthly excursions to learn about the local culture and history.

Gap programs feature different countries each semester. Participants in the 2017-18 semester program may travel to Ecuador and live with families in the city of Cuenca or one of the smaller nearby communities. Organizations accepting Gap volunteer interns include Plan International and Grupo Social FEPP, and monthly excursions will consist of visits to the Incan Ruins, the Amazon jungle, Cajas National Park, and other culturally important sites. Participants may choose between three internship duration options: spring semester, fall semester, or a full-year experience.
